How to Enable LastActiveClick on Windows 11

Windows 11 has lots of cool features that make using your computer fun and easy. One of these features is called LastActiveClick, which is a feature that allows you to quickly switch to the former active window by simply clicking on its icon in the taskbar, so you don't lose your place. This is particularly useful when you have multiple windows open and want to quickly switch between them, reducing the need to manually click on each window or alt+tab between open windows. Turn on LastActiveClick via Registry Editor

Enabling LastActiveClick on Windows 11 is straightforward. Follow these steps carefully to configure your settings through the Windows Registry Editor:

Step 1. Open the Registry Editor

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Enter “regedit” in it. If the User Account Control (UAC) prompts, click on Yes to open the Registry Editor.

Step 2. Navigate to the key

Navigate to the following key by expanding the path in the left pane:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Step 3. Create a new value

Right-click on an empty space in the right pane. Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it LastActiveClick.

Step 4. Modify the value data

Right-click on the LastActiveClick value and select Modify....

Set its Value data to 1, then click OK to enable the LastActiveClick feature.

Step 5. Restart File Explorer

Finally, for the changes to take effect, you will need to simply close the Registry Editor and restart the File Explorer using Task Manager.

Additional tips

You can press Windows key + the number(e.g., Win + 2) to switch to the application pinned to that position on your taskbar.

If you have multiple windows of the same application open, right-click on the application's icon in the taskbar to list the open windows. Click on the one you want to switch to.
